3 V's of Personal Safety

"Learning Behaviors"

All living and non-living things make up our environment. Within our environment, there will always be potential dangers and we should be aware of them when it comes to our personal safety.

The 3V’s is another important part of the Art of Personal Safety’s core discipline. It allows us to pay attention to behaviors that may or may not be a threat to our personal safety. Each of the 3V’s has its own purpose, but when used together they become a powerful tool.

A “look” can be just a look, but when combined with a specific word and a certain tone and/or action, that “look” can convey friendliness, hatred, or hostile aggression. Understanding the 3V’s can help us become receptive to the behaviors of other people. The knowledge will allow us to respond to any situation accordingly, and safely.

“Thinking isn’t something you think about. It comes naturally. Thinking involves many things. It involves being an observer. It involves analyzing things, taking in what’s around you in the world and finding how to make it inspire your work or turn it into a lesson to teach your children; it’s paying attention to details. That’s what thinking is: processing.”

– Madonna Ciccone

We are constantly communicating without the use of words. The moment people pay us attention is the moment we start communicating with them. Understanding how the 3V’s work can be to our advantage. We can use it to promote our personal safety by being confident in our every action. We can walk with purpose and speak with power.
